Once dismissed as a commercial underachiever behind the PlayStation 2 and Xbox, the purple console is now being reassessed with nostalgia, according to a retrospective published in The Guardian.

The Nintendo GameCube reached its 25th anniversary this week, according to a retrospective piece published by The Guardian's culture desk. The console was first released in Japan in 2001, with a European launch following in May 2002, the article states.

The Guardian piece, written from the perspective of a writer recalling their first console purchase, notes that the GameCube sold fewer units than its contemporaries, the Sony PlayStation 2 and Microsoft's Xbox. The article states that were it not for the later commercial struggles of the Wii U, which reportedly led to the first unprofitable periods in Nintendo's history as a games maker following its 2012 release, the GameCube might be remembered as the company's biggest failure aside from the Virtual Boy, a console released in 1995.

According to the article, the GameCube was notable for its compact, colourful design and a distinctive controller built around a large green A button and small analogue sticks, which the writer says gave it an appearance reminiscent of a children's toy brand.

Despite its underperformance relative to competitors at the time of release, the article describes the console as being remembered today with what it calls "misty-eyed reverence," suggesting a shift in public and critical perception of the GameCube in the years since its commercial run ended.

The retrospective was published to coincide with the anniversary of the console's original Japanese launch date.
