The NFL fined San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk $14,926 on Thursday for "engaging in offensive demonstrations," a penalty tied to a touchdown celebration in which he mimed chugging a beer.

Juszczyk said he was surprised by the size and nature of the punishment, given what he described as a lighthearted gesture rather than anything intended to be offensive.

League conduct rules

The NFL enforces a set of guidelines governing how players may celebrate scores and big plays, with fines issued for gestures the league considers excessive, choreographed or inappropriate under its on-field conduct policy. Fines for celebration-related infractions are relatively common across the league each season, though the specific dollar amounts can vary based on a player's history of prior violations.

Juszczyk, a veteran fullback better known for his blocking than for elaborate celebrations, has not said whether he intends to appeal the fine.

The gesture and the resulting penalty drew attention from fans and commentators, several of whom questioned whether the punishment was proportionate to the celebration itself, though the league has not provided additional public comment beyond the fine notice.

The 49ers organization had not issued a separate statement on the matter as of Thursday.
