California governor tells CNN a primary contest against former vice-president Kamala Harris would "waste everybody's time"
California Governor Gavin Newsom said he will not seek the presidency in 2028 if former Vice-President Kamala Harris decides to run, according to a forthcoming interview with CNN.
Newsom, who is term-limited and set to leave the governor's office this year, made the comments as speculation grows over the shape of the next Democratic presidential primary. He said a contest against Harris, a fellow Californian, would "waste everybody's time," according to the interview.
Both Newsom and Harris are widely viewed by political observers as leading establishment contenders for the Democratic nomination in 2028. Newsom has in recent months increasingly positioned himself as a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, a stance many analysts have interpreted as laying groundwork for a future presidential bid.
Harris, who served as vice-president and was the Democratic nominee in the 2024 presidential election, has not publicly announced whether she intends to seek the presidency again in 2028.
Neither Newsom's office nor Harris's representatives have issued additional public statements beyond what was reported in the CNN interview, according to the Guardian's report.
