New European report raises alarm over risk of orbital collisions

A new report from Europe has raised concerns about the increasing risk of collisions between objects in orbit, warning that some orbital regions could become unusable if current trends continue.

"I think we are going to lose the ability to use certain orbits," one expert cited in the report said, pointing to the rapid growth in the number of satellites and debris objects now circling Earth. With more than 17,000 satellites currently in orbit and the number continuing to grow, concerns about congestion and collision risk have intensified in recent years.

The report adds to a broader international conversation about how to manage orbital traffic sustainably, including debates over debris removal, satellite end-of-life disposal, and coordination among the growing number of operators launching satellites into low Earth orbit.
