Nepal Demands $20M Climate Compensation for Devastating Floods

Nepal is seeking $20 million in climate compensation following devastating floods in late August that triggered by a melting glacier collapse, which caused deadly landslides and flash flooding across Chinese-controlled Tibet and Nepal. Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal told The Guardian that the world's most polluting countries need to "wake up" and accept shared responsibility, noting that Nepal contributes less than 0.1% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The confirmed death toll stands at more than 1,300, with over 5,500 people still missing after 12 days of rescue operations. Scientists have indicated the climate crisis played a role in the flooding event.
