Nevada election officials said this week that the Department of Homeland Security wrongly identified 185 people on the state's voter rolls as non-citizens, after reviewing the records DHS had sent them, according to the Guardian.
State officials confirmed that all 185 individuals reviewed were in fact US citizens, raising concerns about the accuracy of the methodology federal authorities have used to flag potential non-citizen voters ahead of the midterm elections.
The finding follows a July speech in which President Donald Trump said DHS had identified a combined 278,000 non-citizens on voter rolls across Nevada, California, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Follow-up letters sent to those states subsequently described the figure differently, stating there could be as many as 278,000 non-citizens on the rolls combined, including up to 15,903 in Nevada specifically.
The gap between the initial figures cited by Trump and the more limited findings communicated to state officials has drawn scrutiny of the administration's approach to identifying non-citizen voters, according to the report.
It was not immediately clear how the remaining flagged records in Nevada will be handled, or whether similar reviews are underway in the other states named.
