Mount Etna Triggers Highest Aviation Alert as Ash Plume Reaches 2.5 Miles
Catania airport continues operating despite ash emissions from the volcano's summit craters, according to reports.

Italy's Mount Etna has triggered the highest level of aviation alert after an ash cloud from the volcano rose to roughly 2.5 miles (about 4 kilometers), according to Anadolu Agency.
The ash emissions originated from the summit craters of Etna, one of the most active volcanoes in Europe, located on the Italian island of Sicily.
Despite the elevated alert, Catania's airport — the main air gateway serving the region near the volcano — has remained operational, the report said.
Aviation alert levels for volcanic activity are typically used to warn pilots and airlines of the risk ash clouds pose to aircraft engines and visibility, prompting authorities to monitor conditions closely and adjust flight paths or schedules if necessary.
Etna has a long history of eruptive activity, and periodic ash emissions from its craters have in the past led to temporary disruptions at nearby airports.
Authorities have not indicated whether flight operations at Catania or other regional airports will be affected in the coming hours, and monitoring of the ash cloud's movement is ongoing.
