Michael Kiwanuka Opens Up About Life After Devastating Stroke
In his only interview since the illness forced him off the road, the Mercury Prize winner discusses recovery and his shelved new album.

Musician Michael Kiwanuka has spoken publicly for the first time about his recovery from a stroke that forced him to cancel a string of performances and delayed the release of his new album, in an interview with The Guardian.
Kiwanuka, winner of the Mercury Prize, fell ill last summer after returning home to Southampton following a series of European concerts. According to The Guardian, he has not been able to return home since.
A Career Interrupted
At the time he fell ill, Kiwanuka's 2024 album Small Changes had received strong critical acclaim, held off the top of the UK charts only by Kendrick Lamar's GNX. His fifth studio album, titled Fudge, had been scheduled for release last autumn.
Kiwanuka had also been expected to perform at the All Together Now festival in County Waterford, Ireland, before an announcement posted to his Instagram said he would be unable to continue his scheduled festival performances “due to continued illness, and on the advice of doctors.”
In the interview, Kiwanuka reportedly discusses the emotional weight of finally being able to release the album that his illness had shelved, describing it in terms of “poignancy,” according to The Guardian.
