Meta's Oversight Board, often described as the company's "supreme court" for content moderation decisions, has ordered the tech giant to remove deepfake videos of a UK politician and a young Muslim woman from Facebook, according to The Guardian.

The board found that Facebook was wrong to leave up a fake video showing a Labour party councillor in Scotland making inflammatory comments about refugees, the report said.

In a separate case, the board ruled that an AI-generated video depicting a Muslim campaign volunteer should have been taken down. The video falsely showed her offering health advice while carrying out absurd exercises or eating junk food, according to the report.

The Oversight Board's rulings come amid growing calls to curb the spread of AI-generated deepfake content online, The Guardian reported.

The board's decisions criticised what it described as "inadequate" safeguards currently in place at Meta to tackle AI-generated fake imagery, according to the report.

The Guardian's report did not specify further details on Meta's response to the rulings or the specific timeline for compliance.
