Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a speech Thursday, September 17, in late morning, before the European Parliament in Strasbourg, according to RFI. He was received with enthusiasm by members of the European Parliament.

In his address, presented as a call for the strongest and closest possible alliance, Mark Carney stated that Europe and Canada could become, through this alliance, a "beacon for democracies," in his own words as reported by RFI.

The Canadian Prime Minister cited threats to democracies, mentioning the rise of nationalism and authoritarian regimes.

RFI did not specify at this stage what concrete measures might flow from this call or the timeline for any joint initiatives between the European Union and Canada.
