Manchester United sell fans £125 clumps of Old Trafford turf amid seventh annual loss
As United posted a seventh straight annual loss, the club also began selling small pieces of its relaid pitch to fans for £125 each.
Manchester United have reported an annual loss for the seventh successive year, bringing the club's combined losses since 2019 to £444m, financial results released Wednesday show. Revenue for the year reached a record £677.6m and is forecast to grow further.
Alongside the financial results, it emerged that United are pursuing an additional, smaller revenue stream: selling fans clumps of grass taken from the Old Trafford pitch. The club relaid its playing surface this summer for the first time in 14 years.
Turf for sale
An email sent to fans offered them the chance to purchase 7cm x 7cm clumps of the old turf for £125 each. The offer allows supporters to own a physical piece of the stadium's playing history following the pitch's replacement.
The turf sale is a minor initiative relative to the club's overall finances, but it illustrates the range of commercial approaches United and its ownership are exploring as they work to offset years of financial losses despite growing revenue.
The club has not disclosed how many turf clumps are available or the total revenue it expects to generate from the sale, which comes as United continues broader cost-cutting efforts under Sir Jim Ratcliffe's football operations leadership.
