Madelin and Feldman: Popular Sovereignty Must Be Limited by the Rule of Law
Two liberal figures respond to candidate Retailleau's criticism of constitutional safeguards.
Former minister Alain Madelin and lawyer Jean-Philippe Feldman defend in an op-ed in Le Monde the principle that popular sovereignty cannot be absolute. They maintain that "nothing authorizes the people to trample on the most sacred rights of individuals."
This position comes in response to criticism of the rule of law made by Bruno Retailleau, the Republicans' presidential candidate, who questions certain mechanisms designed to limit democratic power.
