French President Emmanuel Macron received Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Sunday at Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, the French territory off Canada's Atlantic coast, in a visit France 24 described as historic.
According to France 24, Carney said he wanted to "strengthen ties" between France and Canada as well as with the European Union.
The outlet reported that both leaders sought to assert their countries' sovereignty amid pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump.
