Emmanuel Macron christened the first cohort of volunteers in the new voluntary national military service on Tuesday, September 15, according to France 24. The cohort is named after Henri Fertet, a resistance fighter who was executed in 1943.

According to remarks reported by France 24, the French president paid tribute to "these heroes who helped save France" during the ceremony.

This new voluntary service marks, according to the source, the end of the universal national service (SNU), one of the major initiatives of the final period of Emmanuel Macron's term.

Jean-Marc Vigilant, associate researcher at the Institute for International and Strategic Relations (IRIS) and former French air force general, provided explanations on this change, according to France 24.
