French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney pledged closer ties between their countries, according to The Guardian.
The two leaders met in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, a French territory off Canada's Atlantic coast, in what the newspaper said was the first such visit by a French president since 2014 and the first by a Canadian prime minister.
The Guardian reported the meeting came weeks after Donald Trump posted an image showing the islands and other parts of North America covered by the U.S. flag, as Canada seeks stronger relations with the European Union amid trade tensions with Washington.
