Refugee arrivals from Yemen are multiplying on Djibouti's shores, according to reports by RFI. Djibouti's economy minister indicated that more than 2,000 people had landed on the territory during the past weekend alone.
This acceleration in migration flows follows an offensive by the Houthis, an armed group backed by Iran, who have controlled several coastal towns in Yemen since Thursday, September 10, according to the same source.
Facing the advance of this armed group, many Yemeni civilians have chosen to flee by boarding makeshift vessels to cross the Strait of Bab el-Mandeb, which separates Yemen from the Horn of Africa, RFI reports.
Djibouti, a small country located at a strategic point linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, thus finds itself on the front lines for welcoming these populations fleeing the fighting. The exact number of refugees taken in since the start of this new wave has not been specified beyond the figure reported for the weekend.
