The Ministry of Economy and Finance indicated on Saturday that France's public debt would continue its upward trajectory in the coming years, reaching 119.3% of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2026, then 121.7% in 2027, according to figures reported by France 24.

These projections would mark a new record for the country's debt, which has continued to rise in recent years due to the combined effect of public spending and economic growth slowdown.

According to data provided by Bercy, this upward trend would be consistent with the patterns observed in recent years, though the ministry has not yet specified what measures it is considering to reverse this trajectory.

The government must still present the details of its budget strategy for the coming years, as the trajectory of France's public finances is receiving particular attention from European institutions and financial markets.

This announcement comes at a time when several eurozone countries are facing high debt levels, with France among the member states whose public debt significantly exceeds the 60% of GDP threshold set by European convergence criteria.
