At the UN, Syrian president asserts that the Golan will remain Syrian territory
Ahmed al-Charaa reaffirmed before the General Assembly that the Golan Heights, largely occupied by Israel, would remain Syrian, as Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian prepares to speak following the announcement of resumed dialogue with Washington.
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa told the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday that the Golan Heights region, largely occupied by the Israeli army, would remain "Syrian territory."
The statement comes as the United Nations continues to consider the Golan Heights as Syrian territory under Israeli military occupation, with the international community largely failing to recognize Israel's annexation of the Heights.
Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian is also due to address the General Assembly, a day after US President Donald Trump announced a resumption of dialogue between Washington and Tehran.
The successive speeches of several heads of state during this session of the General Assembly come in a context of persistent tensions in the Middle East, between the Syrian, Iranian and more broadly regional issues.
