Kremlin Reiterates Push for Armenia to Choose Between EAEU and EU

The Kremlin has again urged Armenia to choose between membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and closer alignment with the European Union, according to comments from spokesman Dmitry Peskov reported by TASS.
Peskov said the regulatory and economic standards underpinning the EAEU and the EU are incompatible with one another, suggesting that Armenia could not maintain full participation in both blocs simultaneously without facing significant friction.
Armenia has been an EAEU member since 2015, giving it integrated trade arrangements with Russia and other post-Soviet states, while in recent years Yerevan has also pursued closer ties with the European Union, including discussions on deeper political and economic cooperation.
The Kremlin's renewed comments reflect continued Russian sensitivity toward Armenia's diplomatic balancing act between Moscow and Brussels, a dynamic that has become more pronounced amid wider regional tensions in the South Caucasus.
Armenian officials have not immediately responded to Peskov's latest remarks. Yerevan has previously said it intends to maintain its EAEU commitments while also pursuing broader international partnerships, without characterising the relationships as mutually exclusive.
The comments add to an ongoing debate over Armenia's foreign policy direction as it navigates relations with both Russia and Western institutions.
