Key House Democrat blocks Trump's $2.8bn arms sale of bombs to Israel
Rep. Gregory Meeks, the top Democrat on the House foreign affairs committee, has refused to clear a sale of 40,000 one-ton bombs to Israel, citing concerns over civilian casualties.
Meeks announced the hold on Tuesday on the $2.8bn package of 2,000lb bombs, described as among the most destructive conventional munitions in the U.S. arsenal. The sale is one of the largest arms transfers of Trump's second term.
As the ranking Democrat on the House foreign affairs committee, Meeks has authority to block the transfer pending further review and justification from the administration.
