Kei Nishikori retires from professional tennis at the Japan Open

Kei Nishikori has retired from professional tennis, bringing an end to his career at the Japan Open in an emotional on-court moment.

The former world number four, who became one of Japan's most successful tennis players, told those present that he "kept fighting right to the end" as he reflected on his playing days.

A notable career

Nishikori reached a career-high ranking of world number four and was widely regarded as one of the leading Asian players of his generation, competing at the top level of the sport across multiple Grand Slam tournaments over the course of his career.

His retirement marks the close of a career that saw him represent Japan on the international stage for well over a decade, with the Japan Open providing a fitting setting for his farewell given the tournament's home-country significance.

Tributes from fellow players and tennis officials are expected to follow in the wake of his announcement, reflecting on his contribution to the sport.
