Julianne Moore Shines in Jesse Eisenberg's Surreal Comedy "The Debut"

Eisenberg's third directorial film, a departure toward the absurd, centers on a housewife who auditions for community theater.

Jesse Eisenberg's directorial debut "The Debut," which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, marks a stylistic shift from his previous films "When You Finish Saving the World" and "A Real Pain" toward surrealist and absurdist territory. The film follows Mona, played by Julianne Moore, a repressed housewife who auditions for a role in a community theater production of a musical called "Nosy Neighbors."

According to The Guardian's review, Moore delivers a "riotous" lead performance that anchors the film's increasingly unconventional narrative. Eisenberg draws inspiration from filmmaker Charlie Kaufman and other experimental storytellers to tell what is fundamentally a small story through a larger, more surreal lens.
