Journalists Caught Up in Immigration Crackdown Amid Rising Press Tensions, Guardian Reports

Media workers in the United States are contending with an increasingly volatile environment while covering immigration enforcement, with some detained or deported, according to The Guardian.

The newspaper reported that during protests in Minneapolis against a large-scale federal immigration operation, independent photographer John Abernathy was tackled by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents while documenting the demonstrations. A photograph showing him on the ground with pepper spray on his face circulated afterward, The Guardian said.

The newspaper said the incident underscored that journalists have not been exempt from the tactics used by the agency during the operations.
