Jean-Pierre Serre, the "Mozart of mathematics," celebrates his centennial
The French mathematician, laureate of the Fields Medal and the Abel Prize, was honored Tuesday at a symposium at the Henri Poincaré Institute in Paris.

Jean-Pierre Serre, regarded as one of the great figures in twentieth-century mathematics, was celebrated on his hundredth birthday at a symposium held Tuesday at the Henri Poincaré Institute in Paris, according to Le Monde.
The French mathematician shaped several generations of researchers through the breadth and depth of his work, which covers notably topology, algebraic geometry, and number theory, the newspaper reports.
His scientific contributions earned him two of the highest international distinctions in mathematics: the Fields Medal, which he received in 1954 at age 27, making him the youngest laureate in the history of the award, and the Abel Prize, which he received in 2003 as the inaugural winner of this prize created to fill the gap left by the absence of a Nobel Prize in mathematics.
The Paris symposium brought together mathematicians who came to pay tribute to Jean-Pierre Serre's scientific legacy, whose influence continues to sustain contemporary mathematical research, according to Le Monde.
