Italian steel group Marcegaglia is pressing ahead with plans to build France's first new steelworks in 50 years despite an industry-wide crisis, according to Le Monde.

The company, which acquired the former Ascometal site in Fos-sur-Mer in 2024, is investing 1.2 billion euros to construct a new plant capable of producing more than 2 million tonnes of low-carbon steel annually starting in 2029, Le Monde reported.

The project, named ‘Mistral,’ is described as significant for the Fos-sur-Mer industrial basin at a time when Europe's steel sector is facing a deep crisis, according to the newspaper.
