Ireland Midfielder Jason Knight Says Israel Match Should Not Go Ahead

Republic of Ireland midfielder Jason Knight has said a scheduled match against Israel should not go ahead, becoming the first player in the current Irish squad to publicly voice opposition to the fixture.

Knight's comments come as the Ireland squad reportedly prepares to discuss a collective response to the situation in Gaza, amid broader debate within international football over whether matches involving Israeli national teams should proceed given the conflict.

The stance places Knight among a small but growing number of professional footballers across Europe who have spoken out publicly against fixtures with Israeli teams, arguing that sporting engagement should not continue as usual given the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Other players and national federations have faced similar pressure, though most matches involving Israeli national and club sides have continued to take place under governing body rules.

It remains unclear what action, if any, the Football Association of Ireland or the wider Irish squad will take in response to Knight's comments, or whether a collective position will be reached ahead of the scheduled fixture. International football's governing bodies have so far not moved to suspend Israel from competition, a step some campaigners have called for but that has faced resistance from other quarters within the sport.

The situation adds to a wider pattern of athletes and sporting bodies being drawn into debate over the Israel-Gaza conflict, as pressure grows on international sports federations to clarify their positions.
