Iran's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to international organizations in Vienna, Mohsen Najafi, said that Iran's membership in the General Committee of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) conference was approved despite opposition from the United States, according to a report by IRNA.

Najafi said the outcome followed a secret ballot in which a number of countries supported Iran's inclusion in the committee, according to IRNA.

He characterized the result as another political defeat for the United States, IRNA reported, without providing further details on the vote count or the specific countries that supported Iran's bid.

The IAEA's General Committee plays a role in organizing the agency's annual General Conference, which brings together member states to discuss nuclear-related matters.

IRNA's report did not include a response from the United States or additional context on the proceedings of the conference.
