Iran's Pezeshkian Says Persian Gulf Security Requires Shared Regional Responsibility

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said that lasting security in the Persian Gulf depends on regional countries taking shared responsibility for stability in the area, according to state news agency IRNA.

Speaking on the importance of the Strait of Hormuz, Pezeshkian described the waterway as central to both regional and global security as well as the world economy, given its role as a key route for energy shipments.

Call for a responsible regional approach

The Iranian president emphasized that preserving stability in the Gulf requires countries in the region to act responsibly and to prioritize stability alongside their shared interests, rather than relying on outside powers to guarantee security.

Iran has for years advocated a security framework built around cooperation among Gulf states, arguing that arrangements involving non-regional militaries add to tensions rather than reducing them. Tehran regularly points to the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of global seaborne oil trade passes, as evidence of why regional actors have the greatest stake in keeping the waterway secure.

Pezeshkian's remarks come amid continued attention on Gulf security dynamics, with Iran repeating its position that responsibility for the area's stability should rest primarily with the states that border it.
