Iran Rejects US Designation to IAEA Board of Governors
Tehran says Washington's inclusion on the International Atomic Energy Agency's governing board conflicts with the Statute and founding principles of the Agency, according to IRNA.
Iran has strongly rejected the designation of the United States to the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), state news agency IRNA reported from London.
According to IRNA, Iran described the US membership on the board as incompatible with both the letter and the spirit of the IAEA Statute, as well as with the founding principles of the Agency.
The IAEA Board of Governors is one of the agency's two main decision-making bodies, responsible for approving safeguards agreements and reviewing member states' compliance with nuclear-related obligations.
IRNA did not provide further details on the specific grounds cited by Iranian officials for the objection or on any response from the IAEA or the United States.
