Indonesian wildfires threaten leading orangutan research site in Borneo

Fires have burned within 200 metres of a key research station studying critically endangered Bornean orangutans.

Wildfires in Indonesia are sweeping through a critical research site for Bornean orangutans and threatening Cabang Panti research station in Gunung Palung national park, home to one of the world's longest-running studies of wild apes. In recent days, fires have burned within 200 metres of Rangkong research station, a satellite facility about four miles south of the main camp.

Staff at Cabang Panti are working round the clock to prevent the blaze from reaching the research station. Critically endangered Bornean orangutans have been fleeing the forests as the fires advance.
