Indonesia has expressed interest in Russian civil nuclear technologies, according to Rosatom, Russia's state nuclear energy corporation, which showcased its offerings at a major regional energy exhibition.

Rosatom presented its technological solutions for the nuclear energy sector during Electricity Connect 2026, described as one of Southeast Asia's largest energy exhibitions, according to TASS. The event brought together companies and government representatives from across the region to discuss energy infrastructure and technology.

Nuclear energy interest in the region

A number of Southeast Asian countries have in recent years explored nuclear power as part of efforts to diversify their energy mix and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, while meeting rising electricity demand from growing economies. Rosatom has positioned itself as a supplier of civil nuclear technology to countries around the world, including in Asia.

The report did not specify what concrete steps, if any, Indonesia and Rosatom might take following the exhibition, such as formal agreements or feasibility studies. Indonesia does not currently operate commercial nuclear power plants.

Rosatom has said it continues to engage with countries in Southeast Asia on potential cooperation in civil nuclear energy, though any large-scale nuclear power project would typically require years of planning, regulatory approval and infrastructure development before becoming operational.
