Idaho cold case may be linked to unsolved 1982 Tylenol murders, authorities say

Authorities in Idaho say a cold case involving a man found dead in a church decades ago may be connected to the unsolved 1982 poisonings in the Chicago area known as the Tylenol murders, a case that led to the introduction of child-safety caps on medicine packaging nationwide.

Detective Tim Cooper of the Ada County Sheriff's Office reopened the cold case investigation in 2019, according to authorities, ultimately leading to the posthumous identification of Dr. Mathew Francis Betkouski. Investigators determined that Betkouski had fatally poisoned himself with cyanide more than 40 years ago and was buried anonymously at the time.

A decades-old mystery

The 1982 Tylenol murders remain one of the most notorious unsolved cases in US criminal history, after several people in the Chicago area died after consuming cyanide-laced Tylenol capsules. The case prompted sweeping changes to how over-the-counter medications are packaged and sealed, measures that remain standard practice today.
