The International Criminal Court found Mahamat Saïd Abdel Kani guilty of crimes against humanity on Wednesday, according to France 24.

The former rebel leader was accused of committing acts of torture and unlawful imprisonment while leading the Seleka militia during the civil war that engulfed the Central African Republic in 2013.

The Seleka coalition, a predominantly Muslim rebel alliance, seized power in the Central African Republic in 2013, triggering a period of intense sectarian violence that drew international condemnation and eventually led to ICC investigations into abuses committed by various armed groups.

The conviction marks another step in the ICC's long-running effort to hold accountable individuals responsible for atrocities committed during the conflict, which displaced hundreds of thousands of people and drew United Nations peacekeeping intervention.
