Hurricane Polo Barrels Toward Mexico's Baja California as Second-Strongest on Record
Fuelled by exceptionally warm Pacific waters, Hurricane Polo has become the second-most intense hurricane on record in the eastern Pacific as it tracks toward Baja California.
Hurricane Polo is barreling toward the Baja California region of Mexico, the latest system in what has been a notably active Pacific hurricane season, according to The Guardian.
On September 22, a pressure measurement of 892 millibars was recorded for Polo, making it the second-most intense hurricane on record in the eastern Pacific. The storm is being fuelled by exceptionally warm waters across the Pacific Ocean, which have provided favourable conditions for it to maintain its considerable strength.
Polo is expected to turn toward the west-north-west before shifting to a more north-westerly trajectory on Saturday. The hurricane currently has maximum sustained winds of around 150 mph, with even stronger gusts within its most intense bands. Hurricane-force winds extend outward roughly 40 miles from the centre, while tropical storm-force winds reach as far as 125 miles.
The combination of powerful winds, torrential rainfall, and dangerous seas could have significant impacts along Polo's path. While some fluctuation in intensity is possible over the coming days, forecasters expect the storm to remain powerful as it continues tracking north-westward.
