Houthi Official Says Shipping Through Bab el-Mandeb Strait Continues Normally
A political bureau member of Yemen's Houthi movement says vessel traffic through the strategic waterway is unaffected, while confirming a military operation to secure adjacent territory.
Ships are passing through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait as normal, according to Hizam al-Assad, a member of the political bureau of Yemen's Houthi rebel movement Ansar Allah, TASS reported.
Al-Assad also confirmed that the Houthis had completed a military operation in western Yemen aimed at establishing control over territories and districts adjacent to the strait, according to the report.
The Bab el-Mandeb Strait, located between Yemen, Djibouti and Eritrea, is a key global shipping route connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. It has been the site of repeated tensions in recent years amid the Houthi movement's activities in the region.
TASS did not provide further details on the nature or timing of the military operation referenced by al-Assad, nor additional context on current shipping volumes through the strait.
