Houthi Offensive Near Bab el-Mandeb Strait Displaces Over 70,000 in Yemen
UN agencies say a new wave of fighting in Yemen has forced tens of thousands from their homes, with some fleeing across the sea to Djibouti, deepening an already severe humanitarian emergency.

More than 70,000 people have been displaced in Yemen after Iran-backed Houthi rebels launched an offensive aimed at seizing control of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, according to the United Nations and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The agencies said many of those fleeing the fighting have sought refuge in the southern city of Aden, while around 1,400 people have crossed the Red Sea into neighbouring Djibouti to escape the violence.
The Bab el-Mandeb Strait is a strategically important waterway linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, and control over the area has been a focal point of the broader conflict in Yemen.
The UN and IOM warned that the new displacement wave is compounding an already dire humanitarian situation in Yemen, a country that has endured 12 years of war. Yemen's conflict has repeatedly been described by UN officials as one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, with millions already reliant on aid before this latest escalation.
Details on casualties from the offensive, the specific timeline of the fighting, and the response of Yemen's internationally recognized government were not immediately available. Humanitarian organizations have not yet specified what additional assistance is being mobilized for the newly displaced populations in Aden and Djibouti.
