Homeowners Use Mini Datacentres to Heat Water and Cut Energy Bills
As UK energy bills are set to rise next month, some households are turning to small computer servers attached to hot water tanks as an alternative heat source, The Guardian reports.

A report from The Guardian describes how some UK homeowners are experimenting with compact computer servers, effectively miniature datacentres, to heat water in their homes rather than relying solely on gas-fired systems.
According to the report, Giles Gibson, who lives in London, has a small server attached to his home's hot water cylinder. The device generates heat as it operates and transfers that heat directly into the tank, meaning the water that comes out of his hot tap is warmed by the server rather than by gas.
The Guardian notes that the approach is being highlighted as one of several "innovative ways" households might reduce reliance on traditional heating and potentially save money, at a time when energy bills in the UK are scheduled to increase next month.
The report does not specify further technical details about the setup, its cost, or how widely such domestic datacentre heating systems have been adopted, but frames the case of Gibson's home as an example of how computing power that would otherwise be dissipated as waste heat can be repurposed for everyday household use.
