Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has described anti-asylum activist Daniel Thomas as "a far-right and outright racist" who will feel "the full force of the law" if his organisation commits crimes near contested asylum sites such as Piddington, according to an interview with the Guardian.
In the interview, Mahmood said she wanted to draw a clear distinction between far-right extremism and what she characterised as legitimate local concerns held by residents over asylum accommodation sites.
The home secretary also sought to reassure villagers concerned about asylum seekers moving into a neighbouring former defence site, stating that their presence would not "put pressure" on local resources. According to Mahmood, this is because asylum seekers would be provided with "self-contained facilities".
