The number of stores specializing in household goods has fallen in roughly half of Russia's cities with a population over one million, according to a count conducted for Kommersant by the Yandex Maps service.

As of October 1, Perm recorded the sharpest decline, with the number of household goods stores falling 14.3% compared with the same date in 2025, to 113 outlets. Krasnodar saw a 9.4% drop, to 182 stores, while Krasnoyarsk recorded an 8.4% decline, to 119 stores, the newspaper reported.

The figures point to a contraction in a retail segment that had expanded rapidly in recent years alongside growth in home renovation and furnishing spending. Retail analysts have pointed to a combination of softer consumer demand, rising operating costs and competition from online marketplaces as pressures on smaller specialty retailers in Russia's regional cities.

Kommersant's report did not specify which individual chains or store formats accounted for the closures in each city, or whether similar declines were recorded in the remaining million-plus cities surveyed.

The data adds to a broader picture of uneven consumer retail performance across Russian regions this year, with some categories of discretionary spending showing more resilience than others.
