War in Ukraine: Russian strikes kill several people in Zaporizhzhia, Sumy and Odesa

Several Russian strikes killed and wounded people in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia, Sumy and Odesa regions, according to local authorities and an account given by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

On Saturday morning, the Ukrainian president denounced an intensification in the brutality of Russian strikes, declaring: "If the Russians have chosen to make their strikes even more brutal, the world must choose stronger responses." The statement came after a fresh wave of attacks targeted several regions of the country in a single night.

Initial tolls point to several dead and wounded in the affected areas, though the exact number of victims has not yet been consolidated at the national level. Ukrainian civilian and energy infrastructure has been regularly targeted by Russian forces in recent months, in the context of a war that has now lasted more than three years.

Volodymyr Zelensky's call for "stronger responses" is implicitly addressed to Ukraine's Western allies, whom Kyiv regularly urges to step up deliveries of weapons and air-defence systems in the face of intensifying Russian bombardment.

The situation on the ground remains marked by the continuation of fighting and long-range strikes on both sides, with no immediate prospect of de-escalation, as civilian populations in border regions and areas behind the front line continue to pay a heavy price for the war.
