Greenland: An agreement announced by Donald Trump, but which would change nothing according to a researcher
The U.S. president claims to have obtained "permanent control" over Greenland's security, but a specialist in the region believes that Washington already possessed these prerogatives.
An agreement is set to be signed in the coming days between Washington, Greenland's authorities, and Copenhagen, according to information reported Saturday, September 19 by RFI. Donald Trump announced the same day that he had obtained what he described as "permanent control" over the security of Greenland, an autonomous Danish island.
This announcement could, according to RFI, put an end to a period of tensions between the United States and Europeans, stemming from the American president's stated ambitions to seize the Danish island, which is rich in natural resources and strategically situated in the Arctic.
But for Mikaa Blugeon-Mered, a geopolitics researcher at the University of Quebec and Greenland specialist, cited by RFI, the agreement touted by Donald Trump would not fundamentally alter the existing situation. According to him, "in reality, the United States already had control" over the security aspects mentioned in this agreement.
The researcher further contends that Donald Trump has backed down from all of his initial demands, which aimed at more direct control, or even annexation, of Greenlandic territory.
The precise terms of the agreement and the exact timeline for its signature have not been detailed in the information available at this stage.
