Grocery Prices Rise 7% Across Major Australian Supermarkets, Choice Survey Finds

Grocery prices rose across all four of Australia's major supermarket chains, according to new analysis from consumer advocacy group Choice, which found the average price of a basket of essential items increased by 7% between March and June.

The survey, the tenth quarterly government-funded price comparison conducted by Choice, found the average basket price across Coles, Woolworths, IGA and Aldi rose to $43.62, reflecting continued cost-of-living pressure on Australian households.

Choice's quarterly survey tracks the price of a standard basket of grocery essentials across the country's largest supermarket chains, providing a recurring benchmark for how grocery costs are shifting for consumers. The consistent methodology allows for comparison across the survey's ten editions, tracking price trends over more than two years.

The 7% increase adds to broader concerns among Australian consumers and policymakers about the cost of living, with groceries representing one of the most closely watched household expense categories alongside housing and energy costs.

The survey did not attribute the price rise to a single cause, though grocery price increases in Australia and globally have previously been linked to factors including supply chain costs, weather-related disruptions to agricultural production, and broader inflationary pressures across the economy.

None of the four supermarket chains had issued a detailed public response to the Choice findings at the time of the survey's release.
