Gordon Brown has warned that large political donations distort democracy by enabling wealthy donors to influence voters through advertising and targeted messaging. Writing in The Guardian, Brown cited his experience in the 2010 election, when Labour spent £8m compared to the Conservatives' £17m, partly due to inherited party debts of £25m from 2005.
Brown argues that while British voters cannot be directly bought, their views can be heavily swayed by campaign spending imbalances, particularly in online advertising. He points to recent multi-million-pound gifts to Reform as a final warning that campaign finance reform is needed to protect democratic integrity.
