Google to Launch AI Satellite Testing Tensor Chips in Space Next Week

Google is preparing to send a satellite equipped with its AI processors into space next week to test how the chips perform in orbit, as first reported by The New York Times and confirmed by The Verge.

The launch is part of Project Suncatcher, an experimental Google initiative exploring the possibility of eventually placing AI data centers in space.

The satellite is equipped with Google's Tensor processors, the same family of chips the company uses to power AI workloads on Earth, allowing engineers to assess how they hold up under the radiation, temperature swings and other conditions found in orbit.

Space-based data centers remain a largely speculative concept in the tech industry, with proponents pointing to potential advantages like access to continuous solar power and the ability to avoid some terrestrial infrastructure constraints, while significant technical and cost hurdles remain unresolved.
