Global Crude Steel Production Falls 1.2% in August

China's output dropped 3.7% year-on-year, while Turkiye's production rose 6.8% over January-August.

Global crude steel production decreased 1.2% in August compared with the same month last year, according to industry data cited by Anadolu Agency.

China, the world's largest steel producer, saw its output fall 3.7% year-on-year in August, contributing significantly to the overall global decline given its outsized share of worldwide production.

By contrast, Turkiye's steel industry posted growth over the same period, with total production reaching 26.6 million tons in the January-August period, up 6.8% compared with the equivalent period a year earlier.

The divergence between China's contraction and Turkiye's expansion reflects differing domestic demand conditions and industrial policy settings across major steel-producing economies. Global steel markets have faced uneven demand in recent years amid fluctuating construction activity, infrastructure spending and manufacturing output in different regions.

Industry figures did not provide a full country-by-country breakdown of August production changes beyond China and Turkiye. Steel production trends are closely watched as an indicator of broader industrial and construction activity, given the material's wide use across sectors including infrastructure, automotive and manufacturing.

Analysts will be watching upcoming monthly data to see whether the decline in Chinese output persists or whether global production stabilises in the final months of the year.
