France is expanding the reach of Ecobalyse, a labeling system designed to measure the environmental impact of clothing, by allowing third parties to reference an item's environmental score on a brand's behalf starting in October.

Previously, only the brands themselves could publish environmental scores calculated through the Ecobalyse methodology. The change means outside parties, such as retailers or other organizations, will now be able to cite those scores as well, a shift intended to widen the tool's visibility and use across the clothing sector.

Developers of the system describe the move as a first step toward broader deployment of environmental labeling in fashion, an industry that has faced growing scrutiny over its ecological footprint, from water use and emissions in manufacturing to textile waste.

Even so, environmental associations say the expansion does not go far enough. These groups have been pushing for mandatory environmental labeling across the clothing industry, arguing that voluntary participation leaves major gaps in consumer information and limits the tool's overall impact.

Supporters of Ecobalyse hope that wider referencing of the scores will build momentum toward eventual mandatory display requirements, even as advocacy groups continue to press authorities for binding rules rather than optional participation.
