Fourteen men alleged to be linked to people-smuggling networks go on trial Tuesday in Paris over the deaths of at least 31 people in the worst recorded mass drowning from a small-boat Channel crossing. The accused face charges including manslaughter and facilitating illegal immigration as part of an organised criminal group.

The 2021 sinking of the inflatable dinghy resulted in the deaths or disappearances of 31 people, including a seven-year-old child, making it the deadliest such crossing on record.
