FIDE General Assembly Upholds Suspension of Chess Federation of Russia

The World Chess Federation's (FIDE) General Assembly has voted to uphold the suspension of the Chess Federation of Russia, rejecting a bid to reinstate its membership.

Proposals to restore Russia's status were put forward by the chess federations of Armenia, Belarus, Cuba and Nicaragua, but delegates rejected the move by a majority vote, according to the General Assembly's proceedings.

The suspension of Russia's chess federation is part of a broader pattern of Russian sporting bodies facing restrictions from international federations since 2022, as governing bodies across multiple sports have grappled with how to handle Russian participation in international competition.

FIDE has not indicated when, or under what conditions, the matter of Russia's membership status might be revisited in the future.
