Federal Grant Cancellation Threatens Pittsburgh Alzheimer's Study, Researchers Say
Scientists say a Trump administration funding cut could force early closure of a study tracking dementia risk among 600 older adults in two majority-Black Pittsburgh neighborhoods, leaving cognitive test results unshared.

A federal research grant funding a study of Alzheimer's disease risk in two low-income, majority-Black neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was canceled by the Trump administration in August, according to The Guardian.
Researchers involved in the project said they were given 90 days to wind down the study, a timeline more than five months earlier than originally planned, the report said.
The study has been tracking cognitive health data from 600 aging participants, according to the report. Researchers said that because of the abrupt funding cutoff, they now lack the time and money needed to fully assess the data collected from trial participants.
According to the report, researchers said they have already collected the data necessary to share cognitive test results with participants, but the shortened timeline and loss of funding may prevent them from doing so before the study is forced to close.
The Guardian's report did not specify which federal agency issued the grant or provide additional detail on the administration's stated reasons for the cancellation. The Guardian did not include a response from the Trump administration in the excerpt reviewed for this article.
The study's closure would affect research specifically focused on dementia risk among Black residents in low-income urban neighborhoods, a population that has historically been underrepresented in Alzheimer's research, according to the report.
