A coalition of more than 1,200 signatories, including television presenter Ben Fogle, has signed a letter urging Andy Burnham to commit to manufacturing uniforms for British defence forces and NHS staff within the UK, according to the Guardian.
The letter is being hand-delivered to Downing Street on Wednesday afternoon by the industry thinktank Fashion Roundtable, the report said.
According to the Guardian, the campaign argues that awarding domestic contracts for the production of military and health service uniforms would help preserve manufacturing capacity in the UK.
The intervention comes as London fashion week approaches, with the Guardian noting that the campaign has turned attention away from catwalk fashion toward the practical clothing worn by public sector workers.
The Guardian did not detail further specifics of the letter's demands or any response from Burnham's office at the time of publication.
